The city of Umerkot is currently witnessing a tense atmosphere as the Hindu community and civil society activists take to the streets following the disappearance of Sanam, daughter of Tilu Meghwar. Sanam, a bright student at the Umerkot Girls College, was reported missing on her way home from the campus. What began as a frantic search by her family has now turned into a formal criminal investigation after her father, Tilu Meghwar, filed a First Information Report (FIR) at the local police station, alleging that his daughter was forcibly kidnapped by unidentified men.
The Context of Vulnerability: Local activists and human rights defenders have expressed grave concerns that this is not an isolated incident of a missing person. Instead, it is being viewed as part of a disturbing trend where young women from minority backgrounds are targeted by organized groups. The community fears that such abductions are often precursors to forced conversions and underage marriages, a systemic issue that has plagued rural Sindh for decades.
Community Reaction: Protests have erupted outside the press club, with demonstrators carrying placards demanding “Justice for Sanam.” Community leaders have issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the Sindh Police and provincial authorities to recover the girl. The Hindu Sindh Foundation and other advocacy groups are calling for:
-
An immediate and transparent investigation into the organized networks behind these abductions.
-
Increased security around educational institutions for girls.
-
The implementation of the Minority Protection Bill to ensure legal safeguards for victims and their families.
The Sindh Renaissance Perspective:-
Sindh Renaissance views the abduction of Sanam not merely as an isolated crime, but as a direct assault on the right to education for minority girls. We believe that true “Renaissance” in Sindh cannot occur until every daughter, regardless of her faith, can walk to her college without the shadow of fear. We demand that the state dismantle the underlying patronage networks that protect abductors under the guise of religious merit. Education is the backbone of our vision for Sindh, and we will not allow it to be broken by criminal elements.
