NAGARPARkar, Tharparkar, Sindh🇵🇰: An incident of alleged vandalism at the Mata Jog Maya temple in Rathi village of Nagarparkar Taluka has caused distress among members of the local Hindu community, with reports that unidentified individuals entered the temple overnight and damaged religious idols.

According to information circulating locally, the centuries-old place of worship was found vandalised, with idols reportedly smashed and damaged. The incident has prompted calls for an immediate investigation and the arrest of those responsible.

Police Visit Temple Site

Local reports say Nagarparkar SHO Subhan Memon and the in-charge of the Harho/Haaro Police Post, Rahmatullah Dars, visited the temple following the reported vandalism. The officials are said to have inspected the site and initiated an inquiry into the incident.

The identities and motives of the alleged perpetrators had not been independently established at the time of publication. No suspect has been publicly identified in the information available to this publication.

Concern Over Damage to Place of Worship

The reported attack has been described by members of the Hindu community as deeply distressing, particularly because the temple is regarded locally as an important religious site.

Community members have urged authorities to thoroughly investigate how the alleged perpetrators gained access to the temple, identify those responsible and take action under the law.

Respect for places of worship is a fundamental principle of peaceful coexistence, and attacks or vandalism targeting religious sites can heighten tensions in communities where people of different faiths live together.

Tharparkar has a significant Hindu population and Nagarparkar is known for its historic Hindu and Jain religious heritage. Sources documenting Hindu temples in the region include references to Mata Jog Maya temples as well as other shrines in Tharparkar and Nagarparkar.

Previous Incidents Highlight Need for Protection

The reported vandalism comes against a broader background of incidents involving Hindu places of worship in Tharparkar and elsewhere in Sindh. In March 2014, The Express Tribune reported an incident involving the desecration of an idol-related religious site in Tharparkar’s Diplo area, following which members of the Hindu community staged protests and called for protection of religious places.

Another widely reported case occurred in Nagarparkar in October 2020, when an unidentified person or persons vandalised a Hindu temple during Navratri and damaged an idol associated with Hinglaj Mata. Sindh police at the time said action would be taken against those responsible.

These earlier incidents underline the importance of prompt investigations whenever a place of worship is damaged and of ensuring that responsibility is established through evidence rather than speculation.

Calls for Immediate Investigation

Residents and community representatives are now calling on the authorities to ensure that the reported vandalism at Mata Jog Maya temple is investigated transparently and that any person found responsible is prosecuted according to Pakistani law.

Authorities have also been urged to preserve evidence at the scene, examine any available CCTV footage or other forensic material, and record statements from temple caretakers and local residents as part of the investigation.

This report will be updated as further details emerge.
