UMERKOT, Sindh🇵🇰: A woman from Umerkot, Sindh, identified as Kavita Bheel, has alleged that she was subjected to an attempted sexual assault by a politically influential man and has appealed to authorities for justice.
According to the allegations circulating in connection with the case, Kavita says the accused, identified by her as Ghulam Qadir Geldo, used his influence to prevent her family from obtaining justice. She further alleges that despite approaching the police, effective action has not been taken against the accused.
“The accused is a powerful figure- a political personality- while we are merely helpless,” Kavita was quoted as saying.
She also reportedly said that her husband had been left unable to pursue the matter effectively because of the influence allegedly exercised by the accused.
However, the allegations could not be independently verified from publicly available police records, a court order, or a statement from the accused or his representatives at the time of publication. It is therefore important that the allegations be treated as claims rather than established facts.
The case, if formally reported to police, would require authorities to establish whether an FIR was registered, what sections of law were invoked, whether statements and other evidence were recorded, and what action was taken following the complaint.
Calls for transparent investigation
The allegations have also raised broader concerns about access to justice for vulnerable communities in parts of Sindh. Human-rights reports have previously documented cases involving Hindu women and girls in Sindh, including Umerkot, while also noting that individual cases can have substantially different outcomes and circumstances.
Human Rights Commission of Pakistan records, for example, have documented several cases involving alleged abductions, conversions and marriages of Hindu women and girls in Sindh. Such records provide broader context but do not independently establish the allegations made by Kavita Bheel in this particular case.
A transparent investigation should therefore establish the facts without regard to the social, religious or political identity of either the complainant or the accused. If a criminal complaint has been filed, the relevant police authorities should make the status of the investigation clear, while the accused should be given an opportunity to respond to the allegations.
Need for verified facts
At present, the central claims- including the identity and political status of the alleged accused, the precise circumstances of the incident, whether an FIR was registered, and whether police refused to act- require documentary or official confirmation.
The matter should consequently be investigated through the proper legal process, including any available CCTV footage, witness statements, medical or forensic evidence where relevant, police records and the complainant’s formal statement.
