19-Year-Old Hindu Woman Says She Converted to Islam and Married in Mirpurkhas Court, Seeks Protection

MIRPURKHAS, Sindh🇵🇰: A 19-year-old Hindu woman from the Samaro area has reportedly converted to Islam and married a 33-year-old Muslim man in Mirpurkhas, according to statements attributed to the woman and her husband.

The woman, identified as Hina Meghwar, reportedly adopted the name Zainab Sheikh after her conversion. According to her statement, she embraced Islam voluntarily and subsequently married Jamil Khaskheli in accordance with Islamic law.

The couple also approached the Mirpurkhas court seeking protection, saying they feared threats to their lives from members of the woman’s family.

Speaking to reporters, Zainab Sheikh said that her decision to convert to Islam and marry Jamil Khaskheli was made of her own free will. She reportedly rejected any suggestion that she had been forcibly converted or compelled to marry.

The woman further alleged that she was facing threats from her uncle, identified as Bario, and her father, Dongar Meghwar, and requested the court and authorities to provide protection to the couple.

The reported case comes amid continuing public debate in Sindh over marriages involving members of the Hindu minority community and Muslim men. In previous cases, families of Hindu women have alleged abduction or forced conversion, while women appearing before courts have sometimes maintained that they converted and married voluntarily.

In the present case, however, independent confirmation of the couple’s claims, including the court proceedings, was not found in the publicly indexed sources reviewed for this report. Details such as the date of the alleged conversion, the marriage registration, the exact court order and the outcome of the protection petition should therefore be confirmed from official court records or statements from local authorities before being reported as established facts.

The case highlights the importance of ensuring that any adult woman making a decision concerning religion or marriage is able to do so freely and safely, while also ensuring that allegations made by either the woman or her relatives are properly investigated by the relevant authorities.
