Sumaira Khurram, Coordinator of the Hindu Sindh Foundation, attended a consultative workshop organized by the Thar Education Alliance and CGEF Karachi Malir in collaboration with the Malala Fund, held in Karachi. The workshop focused on advocacy for the establishment of 50 new girls’ schools in Malir, Karachi, with an emphasis on equitable education financing for girls.
The event brought together representatives from various non-profit and civil society organizations who actively participated in discussions and provided strategic suggestions to support Malala Fund in developing a realistic and effective budget framework to be presented to the government.
During the consultative session, Sumaira Khurram shared key recommendations, highlighting the importance of integrating skills-based training for female students to improve school retention rates. She also emphasized the need for enhanced security measures, including the deployment of cameras in schools. Additionally, she suggested revising the teacher hiring criteria to prioritize local teachers, along with structured training programs for those who may initially lack required competencies. According to her, targeted training would help teachers meet institutional standards while strengthening community ownership.
She further recommended collaboration with other organizations to support teacher training initiatives, noting that such partnerships could significantly reduce teacher absenteeism and improve overall education quality.
The workshop concluded with collective inputs aimed at strengthening advocacy efforts to ensure sustainable, inclusive, and safe educational opportunities for girls in Malir.
